As Steve Smith gets ready to take charge of the Gulf Citrus Growers Association, he feels optimism for the industry in the face of adversity.
While times may be tough for the region's citrus growers, they're fighting for their survival, and they're bouncing back better than expected from the beating they took from Hurricane Irma in September, Smith said.
"Most of the people I've talked to are hanging in there," he said. "They are taking care of their groves and managing their groves, and they see a good future ahead."
