Historic drought is parching much of California, transportation costs remain stubbornly high despite tumbling oil prices, and more and more people are asking — and caring — where their food came from.
Toss all that together and you’ve got a perfect recipe for encouraging growers to produce fruits and vegetables closer to where Americans live and shop.
“The food industry as a whole is changing,” said Ray Wowryk, director of business development for Nature Fresh Farms.
The Ontario-based company announced plans this week to build a 175-acre greenhouse just outside of Delta in Fulton County. Construction on the project’s first phase is expected to begin as soon as the weather breaks this spring, and officials say they hope to ship their first cases of tomatoes by the end of the year.
