Monterey Mushrooms Celebrates 40th, Introduces Sustainable, Biodegradable, Fiber Tills

On September 16, Monterey Mushrooms companywide facilities and employees celebrated 40 years of service in the mushroom industry. The festivities included special 40th monogrammed shirts and anniversary cakes. Looking back, it was 1971, when Monterey took its first steps toward industry leadership as a single farm operation near Watsonville, CA. Four decades later, the corporate office in Watsonville oversees a family of operations from coast to coast, border to border, servicing customers nationwide with freshly grown, processed and packaged mushrooms. Shah Kazemi, president of Monterey Mushrooms, further explains that Monterey is a second-generation, family-owned company, now producing over 200 million pounds a year of domestic mushrooms as well as specialty, canned, frozen and dried mushroom products.

These last 40 years have seen many innovative milestones for Monterey, including the introduction of Clean 'N Ready pre-washed mushrooms, Mushrooms in zip-lock poly-bags, and most recently collaboration with the USDA for the development of Vitamin D Mushrooms.

Now Monterey is introducing a revolutionary innovation in product packaging: the Sustainable, Biodegradable and Recyclable Fiber Mushroom tray/till. This is a totally unique packaging product for fresh mushrooms having all of the sustainability features and benefits important to consumers. In addition, the printable surface of the new fiber till allows delivery of clear, impactful and informative messages to the consumer on healthy nutrition, recipes, usage and the versatility of mushrooms. The new packages and tills will be on display at the upcoming PMA Fresh Summit in Atlanta.
