GLENDALE, WI – Maglio & Company, a regional distributor, repacker and fresh-cut processor of produce donated 6,000 pounds of tomatoes to the Tomato Romp Rotten Tomato Fight that took place on September 22, 2012 in Milwaukee’s East Side neighborhood.
Now in its’ sixth year, Tomato Romp is a street festival with the purpose of raising money for local organizations that support feeding the hungry. One component of Tomato Romp is the Rotten Tomato Fight, a timed event that takes place in an enclosed area near Green Market. The tomato fight was inspired by Spain’s La Tomatina and involved 300 participants this year.
As they have done since Tomato Romp was established in 2007, Maglio & Company sponsored the Tomato Romp shirts and donated their supply of off-spec tomatoes to be used in the Rotten Tomato Fight.
“Not only does this allow us to help fight hunger, but it creates buzz about tomatoes and supports fun in the community,” said Sam Maglio, Jr., President. “When we can point to this unique event as an extension of our “unseen” culture, it helps to make us real, both to our customers who know our operational excellence and our friendly neighbors in the city.”
Participants of the Rotten Tomato Fight paid $10 to compete and all proceeds were donated to a local food bank. Other components of Tomato Romp included a Bloody Mary Contest, a farmers market and an art sale.
