San Diego, CA: Changes in packaging can help to make retailers more profitable. That’s the thought behind new packaging options for organic bananas from Organics Unlimited.
“Being able to easily identify the difference between an organic banana and a conventionally grown banana at checkout can be a real challenge for our retailers,” says Mayra Velazquez de Leon, president of Organics Unlimited. “Without proper labeling, many organic bananas may be sold as conventional.”
New packaging includes taping hands of bananas as they are initially packed for shipping. This tape includes a GS1 DataBar™ barcode, allowing the coding to carry information such as the source of the produce and pricing in a smaller space, adding visibility to the value chain. Retailers can now weigh and scan bananas at the register, and for retailers who can use Databar technology, it will eliminate the need for individually stickered bananas. It also encourages the sale of hands containing four to six bananas, rather than picking individual bananas from displays. All bananas from Organics Unlimited also continue to be available with PLU stickers as well.
In addition to the new scannable tape, Organics Unlimited now offers two box sizes. The new box is a 28 lbs. box versus the standard 40 lbs, providing a benefit to small footprint markets.
