Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Thursday that the city would invest $150 million over 12 years to revitalize and fortify the Bronx's Hunts Point Market, the world's largest food distribution center, through which 60% of the city's food supply flows. City-funded infrastructure improvements had been anticipated after the market cooperative signed a new lease last year as it was being wooed by New Jersey.
"Ladies and gentlemen, you really want our food supply to be protected and fortified," Mr. de Blasio said at a speech for the Association for a Better New York Thursday.
The money will go toward modernizing the market's buildings and infrastructure as well as opening up space for new businesses, Mr. de Blasio said.
