Global Organic Specialty Source: A Business Growing, Organically

SARASOTA – Mitch Blumenthal may show up for work most days in a tie-died T-shirt and Birkenstock shoes, but he means business.

Blumenthal's Global Organic Specialty Source, which began in a converted barn at his 10-acre east Sarasota farm, has become an important regional conduit for getting pesticide-free fruits and vegetables from farms to grocery store shelves.

Started as a way for Blumenthal to make some extra money selling his farm's organic blueberries, the distribution business has since mushroomed into something bigger.

Today, the business buys organic fruit and vegetables from local farmers, checks them for quality and then hurries it to area grocers — including Publix Super Markets and Sweetbay.
