LOS ANGELES – The 2012 New Zealand Meyer lemon season is quickly approaching and Giumarra Wenatchee is excited to supply and promote the upcoming crop.
“The new season’s lemon crop is looking good, with larger volumes than last year. Fruit size will also be better suited for the U.S. markets,” says Jason Bushong, sales manager for Giumarra Wenatchee. “Recent weather has delayed first coloring slightly, but we look to be on target for a late June to early July U.S. arrival.”
This is the fifth season for Giumarra’s New Zealand Meyer lemon program. In addition to shipping the fruit by vessel, Giumarra and its growers are offering air freight for any customers looking to get an early start to the season.
Meyer lemons are sweeter than other lemon varieties, making them great additions to fresh salads, main courses, and desserts. They have a unique floral aroma that adds flavor to a variety of dishes. The peel is generally thinner with a slight orange tint in fruit coloring.
“We’ve heard from several customers that Meyer lemons are popular with their consumers for their sweet flavor. This is really a standout fruit that also continues to appear on upscale restaurant menus,” says Erika Salazar, East Coast business development manager for Giumarra.
“An additional benefit of New Zealand Meyer lemons coming into the U.S. is that they do not need to be cold treated, keeping the fruit flavor intact and extending its shelf life,” says Bushong.
The New Zealand Meyer lemon season will conclude at the end of September. For more information, please contact Giumarra Wenatchee at 509.663.4409.
