ORLANDO, FL – Last fall, Produce for Kids teamed up with Ahold’s GIANT and Martin’s Food Stores, Giant Landover, and Stop & Shop divisions; Meijer Stores; Publix Super Markets and more than 15 fruit and vegetable suppliers for theHealthy Schools, Healthy Minds campaign. During the campaign, more than $169,000 was raised to benefit local health and wellness classroom projects through DonorsChoose.org.
From September through October 2012, participating fresh fruit and vegetable suppliers made a donation to DonorsChoose.org, an online charity aimed at helping public and charter school teachers across America, based on the support of their fresh produce items at participating grocery stores. The more items shoppers added to their shopping lists, the more local classrooms would benefit.
“Our inaugural campaign with DonorsChoose.org has proved quite successful,”said John Shuman, president, Produce for Kids. “I am honored to say we are bringing health and nutrition awareness to more than 140 classrooms in our retail partners’ markets across the U.S.”
Funds raised during theHealthy Schools, Healthy Minds campaign are now sponsoring health and wellness projects in classrooms within participating grocers’ markets to be matched by public donations made to the site over the coming months. The match funding will include projects like Ms. Hicks, class where she wants to help her students get up and moving during the day with short exercise breaks while teaching them the importance of healthy choices. Ms. Soriano is requesting cooking materials to help her first grade class learn math, science, literacy and social skills while cooking.Ms. Ryan’s class will be spending five months learning about the human body and how to be healthy.
Produce for Kids will be promoting these projects extensively throughout the coming months through multiple social media platforms and on Produceforkids.com to encourage match donations from the public.
