SALINAS, CA – Last Thursday night, Ag Against Hunger was awarded a check for $11,000 by the California Rodeo Salinas from proceeds for Fight Hunger Night. July 2014 marked the 4th year for this event, which boasts the Produce Mascot Race. During this year’s race, eleven mascots from local produce companies hit the rodeo track for a little friendly competition, starting with a bean bag toss and ending with a mad-dash to the finish line. The participating produce companies are sponsors of the Rodeo and paid an entry fee to participate in the race, which was then donated to Ag Against Hunger, who gathers fresh surplus produce from local growers and distributes that produce to food banks and local schools. In the past three years, this event has raised over $35,000 for the nonprofit. Last year’s winner from Church Brothers defended his first place title, while Tanimura & Antle and Sakata Seed America (a race newcomer this year) took second and third places respectively. It was a great night and an exciting race, and we were thrilled to partner with the Rodeo for this 4th annual event!
Participating companies were: Bengard Ranches, Chiquita Brands International, Church Brothers, Dole Fresh Vegetables, Duda Farm Fresh Foods, Ocean Mist, Pacific International Marketing, Sakata Seed America, Tanimura & Antle, Taylor Farms and The Nunes Company.
