MANTECA, CA – After much long-awaited anticipation, local California grown sweet corn is now available to consumers state-wide. Harvest has commenced down in the Imperial Valley region, and it’s shaping up to be a positive season. A few early shippers have been going for a few weeks now, with the majority of growers starting this week.
“We are extremely fortunate that the weather has been fairly cooperative this year, and we don’t foresee any issues this season. Quality has been excellent so far, and the market has remained steady” said Danielle Cultrera, saleswoman for Van Groningen & Sons. The family owned and operated company headquartered in Manteca, CA began harvest at their El Centro facility this week. They also grow sweet corn in the San Joaquin Valley, which will be harvested early June. “Our Northern crop is moving right along. These late Spring rains have helped and we appear to be on track for a normal start date” Cultrera added.
As the weather warms up and the BBQ’s begin to light, don’t forget to look for your California grown sweet corn on the shelves of your local retailer!
