IRVINE, Calif. – The California Avocado Commission (CAC) is celebrating the second annual California Avocado Week at Downtown Disney in Anaheim, Calif. to encourage visitors to include Hand Grown in California Avocados in their celebrations this summer. Attendees have the opportunity to sample delicious dishes featuring California avocados prepared by some of the top Downtown Disney executive chefs from July 1 through July 7.
Each day during California Avocado Week a chef from one of Downtown Disney’s premiere restaurants is taking center stage, demonstrating culinary creations starring fresh California avocados. Samples of each dish will be distributed to attendees. Following the cooking demonstrations there are interactive “Guac Off” competitions where Downtown Disney guests have the chance to create their own guacamole recipe and win prizes. Guacamole samples prepared by a Downtown Disney restaurant will be distributed following the guacamole contest. Guest judges include Mark Carroll, Gelson’s senior director of purchasing and merchandising for produce and floral, Raul Gallegos, Bristol Farms senior director of produce and floral, and Doug O’Hara, California avocado grower and CAC vice chairman.
“California Avocado Week at Downtown Disney provides the Commission with a fabulous venue to engage with consumers and share the California avocado story in a place that is quintessentially Californian,” said Jan DeLyser, vice president of marketing for CAC. “Sampling the featured California avocado dishes the Downtown Disney chefs are preparing also encourages expanded usage of avocados far beyond the event.”
Throughout the week, restaurants in Downtown Disney are featuring special California avocado menu items created by the executive chefs. Highlights include a California Avocado and Blue Cheese Crusted Rib Eye at House of Blues; Shrimp and Salsa Stuffed California Avocado at La Brea Bakery; Ceviche de Huachinango Shots at Tortilla Jo’s; and California Avocado and a Tartare of Hamachi with Shisho, Micro Cilantro and California Avocado and Jalapeño Sorbet at Catal.
The chefs also demonstrate and feature several appetizers, sandwiches and burgers with California avocados on their menus, giving guests great entertaining ideas for summertime and peak California avocado season. Features include Mini California Avocado Shrimp Clubs at ESPN Zone, California Avocado and Blue Cheese Crusted Rib Eye at House of Blues and a Fried Green Tomato BLT at Ralph Brennan’s Kitchen.
Showing that California avocados can be used in more than just delicious dishes, Sephora is offering refreshing facials featuring avocado oil at their store throughout the week.
