Blueberry Study Finds Health Value

We all know blueberries are a super healthful food that provides our bodies with vital nutrients and antioxidants. But research under way at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center is uncovering new evidence that suggests blueberries are even more beneficial to our health than previously thought.

A study recently released by Pennington shows that obese people who have a family history of diabetes and are considered “prediabetic” significantly lowered their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by consuming two cups of blueberries a day.

“This is a really significant finding,” said Dr. April Stull, a Pennington researcher. “Although previous studies found this to be true in experimental animals, we now know that compounds in blueberries may help obese, nondiabetic individuals maintain healthy blood glucose levels.”

Stull helped lead the study, which was conducted over six weeks with 36 obese subjects who did not have Type 2 diabetes but were insulin resistant and therefore considered prediabetic.
