If the tomatoes at BJ’s Wholesale Clubs in New Jersey taste like they fully ripened on the vine, it might be because they were in Brian Porch’s Salem County fields a few days ago.
Any other summer, Porch would only sell his crops at markets and farm auctions, leaving himself at the mercy of fluctuating prices.
But adding BJ’s to his list of customers means selling produce in larger volume than usual and at a steady price.
Starting this summer, BJ’s 20 New Jersey clubs will sell tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, yellow squash, sweet corn and cucumbers grown by South Jersey farms: Porch Farms in Pedricktown, Maugeri’s Farm in Woolwich Township, Cassaday Farms in Monroeville and Landisville Produce Co-op in Landisville.
