La Cañada Flintridge Calif. – The Allen Lund Company (ALC) participated in Wreaths Across America for the 8th consecutive year. Bill Bess, Director of Carrier Development, was ALC's representative along with the company's rolling ambassador Big Al during the week long caravan which started in Maine on December 5th and ended at Arlington National Cemetery on December 12th.
Wreaths Across America had a humble beginning in 1992 when Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath, found himself with a surplus of wreaths during the holiday season. These wreaths were placed on graves in an older section of Arlington National Cemetery. As the years went by this quiet tribute continued and gathered the attention of organizations and volunteers. In 2005 a picture from the event made its rounds on the internet and the public was intrigued, and in 2006 over 150 wreath laying ceremonies were held across the country, and the number grows with every passing year. In 2015, for the second year in a row, Wreaths Across America placed wreaths on all graves at Arlington National Cemetery, and over 75,000 observers participating in the placement of the wreaths. In addition to the 225,000 that were placed at Arlington, an additional 700,000 wreaths were distributed to cemeteries across the nation to pay tribute to Veterans.
"Participating in Wreaths Across America was one of the most memorable events that I ever experienced. It is impossible to express the feelings, appreciation and emotions that all of us witnessed as our caravan traveled from Harrington, Maine to the Arlington National Cemetery," stated Bill Bess. "We participated in 37 memorable events along the way involving thousands of Americans demonstrating their appreciation to all the veterans that have in past and current generations protected and preserved our freedom. The message that we carried was Freedom is not Free. It was American veterans, their families and all who supported them that has made the United States of America the greatest country in the World. Wreaths Across America's mission statement sums it all up…Remember, Honor and Teach."
