Thermal, CA – North Shore Greenhouses, Inc., grower of North Shore Living Herbs announced the official ground breaking for the $1.8 million dollar solar project is underway this week in southern California. Proud recipients of the REAP grant from the USDA, the grant will cover up to 25 percent of the project costs. According to North Shore, the project is anticipated to come in under budget with a three month completion date.
The ground-mounted Sun Tracker PV system used in this project is designed to follow the curvature of the sun's rays all day long in order to maximize the amount of solar power utilized each day. The goal is to account for up to 70 percent of the energy used in North Shore's greenhouse operations. The company has been Sustainably Grown Certified since 2014 for their growing methodology that enables them to use 70 percent less water than field grown crops and causes no soil depletion. North Shore has been using geothermal energy to heat the greenhouses on the cool winter nights since inception over 25 years ago.
According to Leo Overgaag, President and CEO of North Shore Greenhouses, Inc., "There will always be nay-sayers telling us that it is too expensive to be earth-friendly. We are hoping that we can be an example of a grower that is both earth-friendly and profitable in order to give others confidence to make a positive change for the environment."
