CHICAGO – Superior Farms, the largest lamb processor and distributor in North America, welcomed meat industry veteran Joseph Smith to its national sales team this month.
Joseph is an established entity in the Chicago market, where he will remain based. For the past 36 years, he has served in increasingly responsible roles with Brown Packing Dutch Valley Foods, in South Holland, Ill., most recently as the Director of Midwest Sales.
Smith previously had high school experience cutting meat. “When I started there (Brown Packing), they had me put a frock on and start on the floor,” said Smith. “I didn’t go into sales until three years later, and then I still did plant duties with sales. They wanted you to really learn the operation and I was just willing to learn quickly.”
His focus for Superior Farms will be to increase lamb sales for both foodservice and retail outlets. “I knew my niche market in veal well,” said Smith. “Lamb is a whole different ballgame. I love selling it. Here in Chicago, a diverse area, we eat a lot of lamb. I enjoy my customers and my rapport is very good, so I’m transitioning that to what I do here.”
Craig Powell, VP of Sales and Marketing for Superior Farms said, “Joseph came to us highly recommended. In his short time with us already, I can tell he will be a great asset to the organization.”
Prior to joining Brown Packing, Joseph served our country in the United States Navy. He has a degree from Prairie State College in Illinois. Joseph has been married to his wife Vicki, a dental hygienist for 31 years. They have two daughters, Morgan and Carli.
