This promotion, sponsored by Smithfield, is part of an ongoing relationship with national grocery retailer, Safeway. Smithfield and Safeway have a long-standing history of working together to help feed food-insecure families across the country. In 2011, Smithfield and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) donated 125,000 pounds of protein (500,000 servings) to food banks in Reno, Nev.; Denver, Colo.; Portland, Ore.; and Seattle, Wash. – at the request of Safeway.

Feeding the Hungry is a joint program of the UFCW and Smithfield to donate and help deliver 20 million servings of protein over three years to food banks around the country. The partnership is designed to bring much needed assistance to the growing number of people facing hunger and food insecurity in our communities.

Smithfield has partnered with other grocery retailers across the country and have, over the past two years, donated to Feeding America food banks and other non-profits more than 13 million servings of much-needed protein.

Paula Deen has been the spokesperson for Smithfield since 2006.
