Poultry Growers In U.S. Want Processors To Pay More, Groups Say

Chicken growers in the U.S. want processors to increase payments and bear more of the cost associated with raising flocks, two industry groups said.

The current system places most of the responsibility with growers to pay rising costs for rearing flocks and upgrading plants and equipment, Mike Weaver, president of the Contract Poultry Growers Association of the Virginias, said today in a telephone interview.

Weaver, a speaker tomorrow at a poultry industry workshop coordinated by the departments of Justice and Agriculture, said he wants the U.S. government to help.
