For Beutler Meats and Catering owner Steve Beutler, it's all about quality. That, he said, is what his company is based on, and that's what keeps customers coming back.
"People want quality," he said. "They want to know where their meat came from and what it was fed."
And as meat prices rise, Beutler said customers understand that quality may cost a little more than it did before.
Increasing feed costs and more international exports mean the price of pork is rising — and settling in with record high prices.
The retail price average for all cuts of pork is at a record $3.35 per pound so far this year. And that average is expected to increase to about $3.40 for all of 2011, said Chris Hurt, Purdue University professor of agricultural economics.
