The growth in demand for pork is coming from overseas, making trade agreements important to family farms and pork producers such as Carlyle, Illinois-based The Maschhoffs LLC.
That's what company co-owner and Vice President Julie Maschhoff told attendees at the Wall Street Journal's Global Food Forum earlier this month.
"Consumers are facing a tremendous buying opportunity because they’re able to choose from a variety of healthy, safe proteins at a very affordable price," Maschhoff said, speaking of the glut in supply. "But what we really need is to make sure that we can continue to move our excess protein supplies overseas. And so trade is extremely important to agriculture."
