The Beef Checkoff Program is pleased to announce the winner of the “Livin’ Lean. Lovin’ Beef.” sweepstakes — Brad Bergeron from Nashua, N.H. Bergeron will receive a $250 Spa gift card and a $250 grocery shopping spree to Roche Bros.
Bergeron’s online sweepstakes entry was one of more than 22,800 entries on LeanBeefSweepstakes.com, an increase of 21.8 percent compared to the entries received from the similar 2011 promotion, part of the checkoff's Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative (NEBPI). The promotion ran from Jan. 9 – March 30, 2012, in 137 grocery stores in the Northeast.
“It’s important to enjoy what you eat, and being happy makes you healthy,” Bergeron says. By registering online, Bergeron was able to learn about the more than 29 different cuts of beef that qualify as ‘lean’ by USDA standards, and got access to six lean beef recipes. “I’d have to say my favorite cut to prepare is a minute steak,” he said.
Frank Vitale, meat director for Roche Bros., talked about the imortance of promotions like this in helping to promote beef to his shoppers: “Beef drives sales, and it is important for department volume. It is also important because beef has a big ‘quality tag’ attached. If you have good quality beef, then you will gain a good reputation overall.” Vitale said he believes that participating in the checkoff's 2012 New Year’s beef promotion has helped his company bring more awareness to the entire meat case and their product line. Having the grand prize winner selected from Roche Bros. is further emphasis to Vitale that their efforts in beef promotion are indeed working!
Roche Bros., headquartered in Wellesley Hills, Mass., operates 18 total stores in the surrounding area of Boston.
“We are very excited about the increasing success of the Lean Beef Sweepstakes,” says Christie Brown, director of Retail and Foodservice for the NEBPI. “We hope to continue this momentum as we prepare to launch into the summer grilling season, when a similar promotion will be offered with a grand prize of a $500 shopping spree! Runner-up prizes will include engraved 10-piece kitchen knife sets and copies of The Healthy Beef Cookbook.”

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
