The North American Meat Association supports the 156 members of the House of Representatives who are today asking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to waive a federal mandate for the production of corn ethanol. This would provide critical assistance to livestock and poultry producers currently weathering the worst drought since 1956.
"The U.S. is experiencing one of the worst droughts in its history, and this disaster has already begun to devastate the corn crop which is vital to our nation's food security. We're seeking a waiver to ensure an adequate supply of corn for America’s livestock producers and others who put food on the tables of American consumers," said NAMA CEO Barry Carpenter.jeremy
The Congressional request comes from a broad, bi-partisan Congressional group led by Reps. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), Jim Costa (D-CA), Steve Womack (R-AR) and Mike McIntrye (D-NC), and follows up a petition filed Monday by a coalition, including NAMA, asking EPA to waive the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) for the remainder of 2012 and for part of 2013. Since the RFS requires 13.2 billion gallons of corn-based ethanol to be produced in 2012 and 13.8 billion gallons in 2013, such a waiver could provide significant relief.
North American Meat Association is one of the larger trade groups in the global meat trade, with nearly 700 member companies in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and other countries.
