New Beef Cuts Mean Quicker, Leaner Meals

Two new beef roast cuts are stepping into the spotlight at Des Moines metro-area supermarkets.

The top loin petite roast and top sirloin petite roast are smaller, leaner and quicker to cook than traditional roasts, said Nancy Degner of the Iowa Beef Industry Council.

"As cattle carcasses get larger, the rib and loins are getting larger, but consumers today tell us that they want quality lean beef in smaller portions,'' she said.

The new roasts fall between a tenderloin and a prime rib in size, tenderness, leanness and price. The top loin will retail for about $10 per pound and the top sirloin will cost about $4 to $5, Degner said.
