If Sanderson Farms decides to locate a new chicken processing plant in Nash County, some but not many new chicken houses will be erected locally.
Instead, counties between Nash and Sanderson Farms' feed mill in Kinston will see the most growth in chicken farms, according to Charlie Tyson, director of the Nash County Cooperative Extension Service.
Tyson said that's because a lot of farmers' interest in raising chickens is already satisfied by Perdue and Braswell Milling Co., the two companies Nash farmers contract with already to raise chickens.
Secondly, Tyson said companies prefer chicken houses be located as close as possible to their feed mills because it cuts down on trucking costs.
"I think we would see some new chicken houses here," Tyson said. "But I think there would be more built by farmers in Wayne, Lenoir, Greene, Edgecombe and Pitt counties."
