The city's wholesale butchers still wear blood-stained white coats and work in big industrial warehouses, but lately they are going retail like never before, launching slick e-commerce websites that offer to ship juicy strip steaks, filets mignons and prime burgers directly to consumers' homes nationwide.
"The demand for quality beef has risen across the country with the burger craze and the explosion of new steakhouses," said Mark Solazs, vice president and co-owner of Master Purveyors, the latest entrant. Others include Mosner Family Brands, DeBragga and Spitler and Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors.
The 57-year-old Master Purveyors, based in the city's meat market at Hunts Point, sells its cuts to Peter Luger Steak House, Wolfgang's Steakhouse, '21' Club and other top chop houses. It just launched a consumer website selling, for example, four 8-ounce filets mignons for $125 and six dry-aged prime burgers for $46.
