Michael Smith grew up in a family that raised sheep.
And ate lamb.
But it's only in recent years, the Auburn contractor said, that the meat has become affordable and available enough that someone without a flock could readily cook it at home.
"I would go to the grocery store thinking, 'I'd like some lamb chops,' but when I saw the size and price, I thought, 'I'd like some vegetables,' " he said.
Lamb accounts for less than half of 1 percent of fresh meat sales in the United States, and about one-third of consumers have never tasted it.
