As part of its effort to promote beef to health-conscious consumers in the highly populated Northeast corridor, the beef checkoff, through the Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative (NEBPI), will participate in its sixth annual John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo leading up to the 117th Boston Marathon.
During the event, the checkoff will serve more than 4,500 lean beef snacks to runners and expo attendees, equipping elite runners with adequate protein fuel for the finish.
National Beef Ambassadors will interact with visitors to discuss how cattle are raised and ways to incorporate lean beef into their healthy diets. Ambassadors also will use social media outlets, such as Facebook and Twitter, to share their experiences while at the Sports & Fitness Expo. Expo guests will have the chance to enter to win an “I Love Beef” raffle basket, create a cheer card to encourage Marathon participants on race day, and learn about the new Beef in an Optimal Lean “BOLD” diet, which shows that beef can play a beneficial role in lowering LDL “bad” cholesterol.
So far, six Team BEEF runners are signed up to participate in the Boston Marathon this year, representing the states of Pennsylvania, New York, Kansas and Colorado.. All of these runners have a passion for promoting beef and, as such, serve as effective industry spokespeople.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
