For Food Industry Leaders, Farm Experience Key

Top food and agricultural industry executives say getting their hands dirty
by planting crops or raising livestock in their younger days has proved
invaluable in informing their current jobs.

The on-the-farm training, from milking cows to shoveling manure, gives them a
better overall view on the business of farming and deepened their understanding
of clients’ and investors’ needs, executives said at the Reuters Food and
Agriculture Summit in Chicago this week.

Jeff Conrad, the founder of the institutional farmland manager Hancock
Agricultural Investment Group, grew up on a dairy farm in Pennsylvania and said
most of his staff had farming backgrounds.
