The Food Lion supermarket chain and Tyson Food Inc. have given 36,000 pounds of chicken to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. The donation was made in honor of Tyson Foods’ month-long 10th anniversary celebration of its support for hunger relief nationwide.
The Second Harvest Food Bank serves 14 counties in North Carolina and five counties in South Carolina. The agency provides food to more than 650 organizations, including soup kitchens, residential care facilities, homeless shelters, senior centers and low-income day-care centers.
“There are millions of hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are faced with the realities of hunger,” says Tyson Chief Executive Donnie Smith. “Many people don’t realize the scope of hunger in their own community. We hope that by making this donation, we’re not only helping feed some people, but also making more people aware of hunger in the Charlotte area.”
