Florida's cattle ranchers are pushing to get their meat certified as "Fresh From Florida."
The designation, part of a state marketing campaign, is already used for tomatoes, alligator meat and oranges, the Associated Press said. The state's ranchers raise nearly 1 million head of calves and cattle and the industry has an economic impact of about $2 billion.
The difficulty in giving the beef the Florida label is that many of the calves raised in Florida are "finished" and processed in other states like Oklahoma or Texas, the AP said. Nevertheless, ranchers say they should receive the label and hope it will boost sales with "locavores."
