Ottawa, Ont. – On May 7, during its 95th Annual Conference in Ottawa, Ontario, the Canadian Meat Council elected Joe Reda as President and Chair of the Board for 2015-2016.
Mr. Reda is the Co-Chief Executive Officer and co-owner of Viau Food Products Inc. Founded in 1977, Viau operates two establishments, one in Montreal and a modern, new facility Laval, Quebec. The company provides full time jobs for 400 workers.
The family business offers a vast array of products, featuring cooked or dry cured pepperoni, Italian cooked meats, sausages, pizza toppings and meatballs. Viau Foods was the first in Canada to develop, produce and market a dry cured pepperoni. Today, it is the country’s largest independent producer of pepperoni.
Canada’s meat processing industry includes some 400 federally registered establishments, providing not only safe, high quality protein for Canadian consumers, but also adding jobs and making a significant contribution to local economic activity in both rural and urban Canada. With annual sales of $24 billion, beef exports of $1.9 billion, pork exports of $3.7 billion, horsemeat exports of $28 million and 65,000 jobs, the Canadian meat industry is the largest component of this country’s food processing sector.
The Canadian Meat Council has been representing Canada’s federally inspected meat processing industry since 1919.
