MARYSVILLE, Ohio — The Ohio Beef Council will begin collecting the additional $1 state beef checkoff on Monday, June 2, 2014, following a referendum in which Ohio beef producers voted in favor to increase the total Ohio Beef Checkoff from $1 to $2 per head.
On June 2, the total beef checkoff collected in Ohio will be $2 per head. One dollar will be collected as part of the existing federal checkoff. The additional dollar is result of the state checkoff referendum and will be refundable by written request. Additional checkoff funds will be utilized in Ohio to support programs designed to increase the demand for beef.

The beef checkoff is assessed on all cattle, including beef, dairy and veal, when there is a change in ownership. The Ohio beef checkoff is payable to the Ohio Beef Council and can be mailed to 10600 U.S. Highway 42, Marysville, Ohio, 43040.

The Ohio Beef Council and the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board are responsible for developing programs that increase the demand for beef and veal. The federal Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The federal checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval. The state checkoff assesses an additional dollar and funds generated support beef demand building programs in Ohio.
