Canby, Ore. – Terra Nova Nurseries announced today a sneak peek of Echinacea CARA MIA™ Yellow ('TNECHCMY') PPAF, which was bred to showcase a high crown count with an abundance of bright lemon-yellow double flowers, spanning more than a 5-month period. The new variety is the second introduction to the CARA MIA™ Series, which means “my beloved” in Italian.
This new showy echinacea’s growth performance matches the habit of its robust predecessor, Echinacea CARA MIA™ Rose, which also has an exceptional crown count and early bloom time.
With wide-ranging use in U.S.D.A. Hardiness Zones 4-10, Echinacea CARA MIA Yellow displays gorgeous flowers from June through October. Bred for sun tolerance, Echinacea CARA MIA Yellow grows well in full sun. The flowers literally shine in sunny gardens and landscapes.
It exhibits a uniform and dwarf habit, with stems rebranching freely. Testing and trials by the breeding team indicate the new variety produces more and larger flowers, a higher crown count, and better-quality foliage than other dwarf echinaceas.
Echinacea CARA MIA Yellow provides numerous landscape applications, including use in mass plantings, the front portion of borders, and mixed beds. It is fragrant and makes for a beautiful cut flower.
Special uses allow the new variety to be a multi-purpose garden plant in the Deep South or where low-water usage is present. It is an important garden addition for birdwatchers, as it attracts hummingbirds. Echinacea CARA MIA Yellow is deer-resistant and a pollinator attractor.
Echinacea CARA MIA Yellow’s mature height is 16” with a width of 31” and impressive flower height of 20”. Growers will benefit from a finish time to 4” of 6-8 weeks.
Terra Nova Nurseries has created a “Plant Profile” page and “Grower Recipe” specific to this new variety so growers interested in orders can learn about growing habits, plant characteristics, fertilization recommendations, water requirements, and other insights provided by the breeding team.
