Orchid Grower Tapped To Lead Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau

WATSONVILLE — Chris Enright’s roots go back to the beginnings of California agriculture.

His great-great-grandfather, James Enright, started out for California from St. Joseph, Mo., just ahead of the famed Donner Party in 1846, and according to family lore, after participating in the rescue of the survivors of the tragic pioneer catastrophe, settled in the Palo Alto area, where he grew wheat and pears.

In 1959, Enright’s father, Austin, started a wholesale orchid business on 41st Avenue, then a two-lane road. Enright recalls growing up in the greenhouses, sandwiched between the apartment and condo complexes of a growing Capitola.

Enright took over the business after graduating from Cal Poly with a degree in horticulture in 1996, and moved it to 23 acres up against the hills at the edge of the Pajaro Valley on Webb Road.
