New Floral Bill Will Keep Nearly $1.5 Million In Oregon

Since I first began serving as state representative from House District 22, I’ve come to believe something very important and very fundamental — that my office doesn’t belong to me, it belongs to you. In every vote I take, I think to myself, “How will this legislation affect our district?”

I’ve been working on one particular piece of legislation for some time, and I know that it would affect our district in an incredibly positive way by creating jobs in our community and keeping valuable dollars in Oregon. Currently, out-of-state floral order companies keep 20 percent of the amount paid by consumers for floral products. This amount may have been justified in the past, but in today’s world of e-mails and online orders, which are of little cost to these companies, these fees are completely uncalled for and a burden on our local florists and consumers.

The bill, House Bill 2212, has the potential to keep around $1.5 million in Oregon that would otherwise go to big, out-of-state corporations. That’s money that will go to small businesses in our communities and has the potential to create jobs for Oregonians. In this tough economy, every job is valuable and every job has the potential to impact Oregon’s standard of living.
