When florists June Strandberg and Margitta Schulz won the contract to produce
1,800 bouquets for medallists at the Winter Olympics, their first instinct was
to design something that looked like B.C., with lots of native foliage.
However, the bouquet that was eventually approved by Vanocs design panel will
contain green spider chrysanthemums, green hypericum berries and green
aspidistra leaves but no flowers that are native to B.C.
Vanoc spokeswoman Renee Smith-Valade says all the selected flowers are grown in
B.C. and Canada. Given the time of year, we cant source them from the natural
outdoors here.
