National Park Services Chooses Spicy Cheryl Orange Mums For The White House

Greensboro, N.C., USA – Syngenta Flowers, Inc. is proud to announce that one of its premium Yoder® garden mum varieties, Spicy Cheryl Orange, has been chosen to decorate the most prestigious of homes – the White House. Earlier this fall, the National Park Service requested Tidal Creek Growers provide 2,000 eight-inch containers of Spicy Cheryl Orange, a bold, two-toned garden mum, especially for the White House. The mums are planted outside the Oval Office and near the fountains on White House grounds for thousands of visitors to view.

This is the third year the National Park Service has chosen Spicy Cheryl Orange to decorate the spectacular gardens. The National Park Service also grew Sparkling Cheryl Yellow and Kathleen Dark Red for the White House gardens this year. Previously, Andrea™ Orange Bicolor had also been used at the White House. Tidal Creek Growers has grown Syngenta mums for the past 11 years. “We choose varieties based on plant quality, performance and color,” said Alexis Moretti, sales manager at Tidal Creek Growers. “Syngenta mums deliver on all three platforms.”

Throughout the season, a representative from the National Park Service visited Tidal Creek Growers to monitor the mums’ progress to ensure they would bloom in tandem with other plants being featured in the same gardens.

“The National Park Service clearly knows what they want and have a good eye for premium mums,” said Liz Hunt, head of marketing for Syngenta Flowers. “Spicy Cheryl is at the top of its class for no-pinch production, strong but flexible stems, excellent flower longevity and outstanding bloom coverage. And the vivid orange color they chose is truly striking in the fall landscape.”

The White House grounds are the oldest, continually maintained landscape in the United States. In 1972, the White House began facilitating spring and summer garden tours. Today, the tours draw more than 30,000 visitors each year.(1)
