A sea of color ripples through Multiflora Greenhouses—red speckled with patches of white and pink. Mist floating from the ceiling blankets the already humid interior with a faint shimmer of moisture as critical customers browse the petaled merchandise and families pose among the blooms.
It’s poinsettia season, and Multiflora Greenhouses has turned out a host of the popular holiday flower for the 28th year. The company—a mostly wholesale business located off New Sharon Church Road selling a variety of seasonal plants—boasts four one-acre double plastic greenhouses, a half-acre glass greenhouse and about an acre of outdoor planting space mainly reserved for spring and summer crops.
But it’s the holiday wares the company is most well-known for, with people coming from all over to take pictures, create holiday card shots or just witness the flowers in bloom.
“We have here 4-and-a-half acres of greenhouses,” Jake Rijdes, company president, said. “So we grow 140,000 poinsettias. Where can you see 140,000 poinsettias? People come with cameras. They bring the children; they bring the dogs. That is a sight to see.”
