Minnesota Organic Flower Farmers Relocate

TWON OF ROCK ELM — Minnesota’s loss is Pierce County’s gain.

When Mike Leck and Jennifer Nelson learned the land they’d been renting at Northfield, Minn., was going to be sold, they needed to move their sustainable farming operation. They first looked for property around that vicinity, but it was price-prohibitive. So they shifted their focus a bit east — to Wisconsin, a state with which Leck especially was already familiar.

“We fell in love with this area,” Nelson said from Humble Pie Farm, the 16 acres in the Town of Rock Elm they took over in October.

Her partner explained they mutually agreed on the name, regarding “humble” as being among their characteristics because both have a knowledge of the earth, yet as farmers they’re at the mercy of the weather.
