Last year the LSU AgCenter launched a program called the Louisiana Super Plant program. The idea was to make gardeners aware of several really dependable and outstanding plants that can be counted on to add beauty to a landscape, plants that often go unnoticed by the majority of gardeners who live in this state. Additionally, it was to make growers and retailers aware of these plants in hopes they would grow them and make them easy to find at retail nurseries throughout the state. All of these plants were designated Super Plants only after extensive testing by university horticulturists and industry professionals.
During the fall and early winter period of 2010, three species of plants were chosen to wear that title. These were two cool-season bedding plants, the Amazon series of dianthus and the Camelot series of foxglove. The third plant to make this select list was the Shishi Gashira camellia.
Several varieties of the two bedding plants were and, I suppose, are available ,which gives buyers a broad range of colors and forms from which to choose. Only the foxglove was difficult to find locally last fall, but there were several sources in South Louisiana.
