This year, it could mark the last helium balloons for who knows how long. The problem? A global helium shortage.

“I was told by my supplier around Valentine’s Day that helium orders wouldn’t be filled for anyone but hospitals while the shortage lasted,” County Market floral manager Yvonne Davis said. “I keep thinking we’re going to fill our last balloon any time now.”

The grocery store at 3001 Veterans Parkway isn’t alone.

Friday’z Gift Shoppe and Florist, 1305 Wabash Ave., removed helium balloons entirely from its offerings this spring.
