Happy Summer: Calibrachoa Trial Results

Happy Summer is a joined initiative of Dutch breeders with a trial field that is also open for visitors. More than 700 varieties, also many Selecta varieties, are tested in baskets and in beds from April to October.

Independent representatives of the horticulture industry evaluate the varieties regarding different criteria. Calibrachoa are tested for rich flowering, constant blooming and quality of leaves as well as for uniformity, plant shape and strength of the plants. Overall, the Calibrachoa plants were evaluated seven times between week 25 and week 40.

Challenging weather conditions in the summer of 2014 afflicted the Calibrachoa plants. In June the temperatures were very high and July was a very dry month. Pythium led to a big loss of Calibrachoa varieties. The remaining plants had to fight a strong change of weather conditions with rain and low temperatures in August.
