GTIN To Enable Flowers Faster Inspection

June 2010 is the next milestone in the GTIN initiative for the floral industry. By the end of June all companies should be using the GTIN number/barcode on the boxes and the UPC barcode on the flower bunches of bouquets.

USDA and Customers and Border Protection (CBP) are working on a procedure with GSI to be able to use the GTIN number and GS1 One Synch system to be able to identify, scan and inspect flowers faster for the inspection process.

Companies who are already GTIN ready are participating in a pilot program and the importing companies in using GTIN/barcodes. Ultimately, companies who have GTINs/barcodes will be able to process flowers faster through importation inspection process use.
