Introduced at the FSI General Assembly on 24 January in Essen, the next steps for theFSI basket of Standards will be to gradually include additional environmental benchmarking criteria with an emphasis on reliable data and record-keeping.
After 2020, the standards that are in the basket will be recognised as sustainable production under not two, but three benchmarking categories: Agricultural, Social and Environmental. The Environmental scope includes additional criteria to prepare growers and the sector for relevant market demands through:
- the adoption of standardized record keeping on key inputs;
- the assurance of quality performance of standards and audits;
- transparency and the comparison of performance over time and space.
This evolution strengthens the FSI Basket as international reference for sustainability practices. It is NOT a new standard and the current two-dimensional Basket (Social & Environmental) remains valid until 2020.
