The cut-flower industry in the Pajaro Valley is just a shadow of what it once was, but a newcomer has been able to supplant some of the lost jobs using the infrastructure and know-how that still remain from the region’s days as a focal point for floral agriculture.
Continental Floral Greens, one of the largest growers of floral greens in the world, has been operating at a site on San Andreas Road for the past two years. A former carnation plant, the site, which employes 42 people, is perfectly suited for its new role as the firm’s key distribution and production center in California.
“This used to be an old carnation facility,” said Kirk di Cicco, general manager of the CFG plant. “It had boilers, used heat and diesel — it was a busy place.”
