In a breakthrough not to be sneezed at, green-fingered scientists have created pollen-free geraniums.
The plants were unable to make the pollen that causes the sneezing, sniffing and itchy eyes of hay fever.
As an added bonus, the ‘super-geraniums’ lived longer than usual and were prettier, with more vibrantly-coloured flowers.
They did, however, still require to be watered.
Geraniums have been cultivated in Europe since the 17th century and are one of the most popular garden and house plants around the world, with conventional breeding techniques used to create a range of different flower colours, shapes and scents.
