Over the 2010/2011 season, the export of Dutch flower bulbs rose by 7 percent, to a total value of 623.9 million euros.
Strikingly, this year marks the first time in four years that bulb exports have increased. Exactly 6 billion bulbs were exported abroad, data from the Product Board for Horticulture indicates. That figure represents an increase of 2 percent over last year.
“Export value within the European Union amounted to 278 million over the recent season; a 2 percent increase over the last. Export to countries outside the EU increased by 12 percent, to 346 million euros”, the product board notes.
Germany saw a significant decrease in its bulb imports (-4%), while the United Kingdom, on the contrary, has been importing a lot more bulbs lately (+9%). Poland and Portugal also noted declines of about 10 percent, whereas Sweden imported 12 percent more than in the prior season. Outside the EU, Mexico noted an impressive bulb import increase of 27 percent.
