Costly Airfreight For Ecuador Flower Exporters

The closure of a part of the North Pan-american Highway, due to the poor state of the slopes around Collas Guayllabamba, as well as the increase in the cost of freight of cargo planes, affect the activities related to one of the country's major export commodities.

Since the lock step by the Pan American Highway, the administrative and technical staff of the flower farms who reside in Quito, need more than two hours to get to work in Cayambe and Tabacundo, among other areas of the north of the province of Pichincha.

Alejandro Martinez, executive director of Expoflores, argued that the measure taken by the Ministry of Transport and Public Works to ensure the safety of road users did not cause a major problem the floricultural sector yet, because it came in a low season.
