Attention, guys. Be daring this Valentine’s Day. Skip those tightly-furled, long-stemmed roses that cost a bundle and look so prissy. Instead, give your significant other a flower that might truly inspire bouts in the boudoir.
That’s the Anthurium. Although the name may be unfamiliar, this plant has actually been around for years — and it’s downright weird. Anthurium flowers are often red and look unreal, as if made of shiny plastic. But the fun part sits at the centre of each bloom: a saucy spike that wobbles about and is called a spadix.
Once we could only buy these quirky creations of Mother Nature as potted plants. But now, thanks to the ingenuity of some talented folks from the Netherlands, they’re available as locally grown cut flowers. And that’s great news. I was never turned on by plasticky potted red Anthuriums, yet the big beautiful cut specimens are something else. They come in glorious colours — pinks, greens, every red from scarlet to chestnut, yellow, orange, brown, stark white, antique hues and stripey combinations. Arranged in a vase, they’re exciting and different. And as for that spike? Well, it’s certainly on the sensual side.
